The Thomas Family Orchard
The Thomas Family Orchard is
located six miles south of Zanesville, Ohio, on State Route #555 directly behind Stovertown. The Orchard was planted in the 1930s by Dalton Swingle. As a young boy, Bill helped Mr. Swingle harvest his produce. Mr. Swingle maintained ownership of the orchard until Bill and Vicky purchased it in 1972. The original orchard consisted of old standard apple and peach tress. Upon purchasing the orchard, Bill and Vicky started to upgrade by replacing old trees with semi-dwarf trees, allowing them to plant many more tress on the same acreage. After about 13 years of no peach crops and the fact that they were being advised to diversify (Do not put all your apples in one basket), they planted one acre of seedless table grapes in 1986. This was an experimental planting in cooperation with The Ohio State University, Wooster Campus. OSU supplied the plants and they supplied them with five years of research. Today The Orchard consists of 26 different varieties of apples (approximately 400 trees), peaches, seedless table grapes, plums and blueberries. Our harvest season is: - June and July - Blueberries - July and August - Peaches - July to October - Apples - August and September - Grapes, plums and blackberries. Fresh cider is available at The Orchard from the middle of September until Christmas most years. Our marketing is mostly retail, at the downtown Zanesville farmers market welcome center, Wed. evenings and the North Market in downtown Columbus each Saturday from July through Christmas. |
